A.P.Polo - "Monolith" - Hamburg (Germany). A monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock, such as some mountains. Erosion usually exposes the geological formations, which are often made of very hard and solid igneous or metamorphic rock. Some monoliths are volcanic plugs, solidified lava filling the vent of an extinct volcano. In architecture, the term has considerable overlap with megalith, which is normally used for prehistory, and may be used in the contexts of rock-cut architecture that remains attached to solid rock, as in monolithic church, or for exceptionally large stones such as obelisks, statues, monolithic columns or large architraves, that may have been moved a considerable distance after quarrying. It may also be used of large glacial erratics moved by natural forces. The terms monolith or monolithic are used not only for natural objects, but also for man-made or at least modified objects, such as the megaliths from the Neolithic and Bronze Age (including menhirs and the supporting and capstones of dolmens etc.), the more detailed statue menhirs, obelisks and columns of more recent or more highly developed cultures, architrave blocks, baptismal fonts etc. The Buddha statues from the Bamiyan Valley (Afghanistan), the Jain statue of Bahubali from Shravanabelagola (India), the colossal heads of the Olmecs from Veracruz (Mexico), the Moai of Easter Island and the presidential heads from Mount Rushmore (USA) are also regularly described as monoliths or monolithic. In modern construction, all reinforced concrete components are in fact described as monolithic, as they are cast in one piece. Connections between two such components are called monolithic connections or monolithic connections. The terms monolithic or monolithic are also sometimes used to describe objects of art and utility made of "cast concrete". In the literal sense it is not a painting, in the practical sense it is a painting with light! In my hometown Hamburg (port city) I took several long time exposed photos in illuminated ship containers, which were equipped with different artificial light sources including LEDs. The pictures were taken out of the movement while rotating the camera at the same time. The "light signals" of this action, which served as a "light palette" for this work, so to speak, I then used for digital painting.
