A.P.Polo - "Birdcage" - Hamburg (Germany). Birdcages were first used in ancient times in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome, China, India, Babylon and other places. During this time, birds were often kept for religious or symbolic reasons, but were also seen as a sign of wealth and aristocracy, such as African birds imported for Roman courts. This trend continued in Europe after Portugal reintroduced canaries in the 16th century. The Harz Mountains in Germany became known for the unique design of bird cages, which were carefully carved to resemble cuckoo clocks. The trade in exotic birds became very lucrative and some birds were paid by weight in gold. Birds in captivity were a status symbol and were kept in wealthy households and royal courts and especially by monarchs throughout Western Europe. Creativity in the design of birdcages was particularly pronounced in the 18th and 19th centuries. The influences ranged from China to Gothic Europe. The peak of bird keeping was probably in the Victorian era. Innovative designs and special materials struck a chord with the times. In America, too, birds were kept in wooden cages or bamboo cages by settlers in colonial times. In 1874, the Andrew B. Hendryx Company (then Hendryx & Bartholomew) was founded in America and became one of the leading manufacturers of fashionable bird cages alongside Harz. When Art Deco and the Arts and Crafts Movement emerged in the early 20th century, birdcages were also designed accordingly; mostly as hanging cages in oriental style. The next major change came in the atomic age, when plastic became the material of choice and cages could be mass-produced. Iron and plastic cages were gradually replaced by large and sleek steel cages.
