ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: SILENTLY WAITING
A lion (Panthera leo) rests partially in shadow as the first light of day touches its face, revealing form and detail against a deep, dark background. The soft illumination traces along the contours of the head and shoulder, while much of the body remains obscured, creating a strong interplay between light and shadow. The turned head and focused gaze add a sense of awareness, while the surrounding darkness simplifies the scene and directs attention to the subtle transitions of tone. Captured during an early morning safari in South Africa, this moment reflects the quiet stillness that comes with the first light of day. The painterly treatment enhances the softness of the light while preserving the natural structure and presence of the subject. “Silently Waiting” received Best in Class (General), Judge’s Choice, and an Excellence score at the 2018 PPOC Manitoba Image Salon. The rich tones, controlled lighting, and minimal composition make this piece well-suited for dramatic interior spaces, where depth and contrast can be fully appreciated.
