She sits like a question in the middle of a storm of paint — a woman carved from brushstrokes neither wholly finished nor entirely undone. The artist has built and unbuilt the space around her with thick directional flourishes: slabs and shards of blue slate ochre and white collide like crumpled architecture folding inward until the figure becomes both refuge and aftershock. From the fractured background she seems to have been hewn as if the canvas itself had split open to reveal a living warmth at its center. Her body is rendered with the same blunt confident hand that shapes the world encircling her. Broad textured strokes of flesh-tones — creams rose-ochres and honeyed ambers — model muscle and bone without softening the edges light lands on shoulder and collarbone with a decisive slap then slips into shadow beneath ribs and along the inside of a crossed thigh. There is an honesty here: a realism tempered by paint a sense that skin is a topography of light not merely a surface to be admired. Her pose is intimate yet guarded.
