ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: ELONGATED NECK
She wakes with the desert in her eyes. Not asleep not quite awake the woman’s face fills the foreground like a carved cameo brought to breath. Her neck is a long improbable column — porcelain stretched into a telescope — mottled with the pale greens of lichen or old glaze. It rises from the arid ground as if the earth itself has decided to wear a human head like a crown. Her skin bears freckles like the map of a forgotten coast her cheeks are flushed as if each small freckle were a tiny ember. Two enormous eyes stare outward wide and watery and impossibly reflective taking in a sky that does not behave itself. Above her the day is both ordinary and wrong. The sunlight is bright the air clear but peppered among the clouds float moons and spheres the size of planets pummeled and pocked like ancient coins. They hang low over a red plain that stretches into rust-colored mesas — tall weathered monoliths rising in the distance. The kind of landscape that remembers thunder and keeps secrets in its canyons. Little tufts of scrub and the occasional stoic cactus are scattered like punctuation marks across the sand. A few white clouds drift lazily their edges catching the light and casting soft shadows across the woman’s elongated neck. Her hair is a small universe. Dark coiled it lifts and arranges itself into a coronet of blossoms: roses tiny daisies something wild and orange that seems to be perpetually opening. Small leaves and stems thread through the curls as if someone planted a garden there and it took root. A single bright bloom nestles just behind her ear and near the crown a little cloud seems to have settled — a miniature weather system for the flora on her head. The flowers are not merely ornamental they appear to be listening to responding. Petals tilt toward the floating moons as if receiving instructions. The woman’s neck is like a column that contains the sound of the wind passing through narrow canyons the low thrum of something subterranean. Her hair-garden whispers with the minute songs of insects that might exist only here where earth and imagination intermingle. The moons — patient dusty foreign — drift in a lazily conspiratorial parade each one a thought bubble waiting to burst. You begin to sense a story: perhaps she is the last sentinel of a desert that remembers better climates a guardian whose job is to watch the skies for returning tides. Somewhere beyond the mesas a wind begins to swell carrying sand like a secret across the plain. The scene holds electric and expectant the moment before something thinks to become a story. You close the page or you don’t the picture keeps narrating itself within you. The desert the moons the blooming hair the stretched neck — all conspire into something beautiful and a little melancholy like a dream that remembers what it has lost and refuses to stop looking up.
