ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: DIZZYING CHECKERBOARD
A floor of black-and-white stripes opens like a magician’s stage then breaks into a dizzying checkerboard that stretches toward a horizon of low folded mountains. Concentric bull’s-eyes — one beneath the viewer one suspended midair another receding into the distance — drum a silent rhythm across the scene. They are targets and heartbeats at once: perfect circles of black and white ringed by red each a focal point that seems to pull sight inward until the whole world feels like it’s being funneled through a single point. Above the ceiling is an impossible geometry of prisms and rectangles each face painted in high clean color: cobalt lemon vermilion and emerald. Blocks hover like planets their faces striped checkered or tiled in subtle gradients. Some carry bull’s-eyes on their sides others show only a candy-cane banding that seems to rotate as you blink. The patterning — from wavy blue ripples to stark vertical blacks — competes for attention creating the sense that every surface is breathing in its own rhythm. Between floor and sky the middle distance is a carnival of glassy cubes and translucent slabs. Light passes through them and fractures into miniature checkerboards on the ground. Tiny reflective faces catch color from the larger blocks and scatter it as if someone has spilled marbles of paint. The air itself seems to hold a faint spiral a whirlpool of color coaxing the eye along a tunnel that points to the distant mountains which are painted in the same graphic language: stripes gradients and geometric shadows that make stone look like folded paper. There is a paradoxical calm to the chaos. The clear clinical edges of the blocks and patterns give the scene a precise almost mathematical order while the shifting perspectives and concentric spirals introduce vertigo and possibility. You could walk those black-and-white paths and step from square to square like a queen on a chessboard or you could leap and feel for a moment that you might pass through one of the floating cubes and emerge into another landscape entirely. Near the foreground a large black-and-white spiral anchors the composition as if the world has been built around that single hypnotic symbol. Around it vivid rectangular blocks — red green blue and yellow — appear like bold punctuation marks interrupting the monochrome and insisting on their presence. Smaller elements — a solitary red cube a translucent green slab — hover with deliberate placement suggesting that every object is a clue in a puzzle. The overall effect is a surreal corridor between toy-shop order and mind-bending illusion. It reads like a map of a dream: intentional yet inscrutable precise yet pliant. You sense movement without motion narrative without characters it’s a stage set for a story that has not yet been told an invitation to step in and discover whether the concentric centers are destinations or doors. And as your gaze traces the spirals and stripes toward the mountains the world seems to tighten its geometry and promise that something — perhaps an answer perhaps another pattern — awaits just beyond the next square.
