ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: MECHANICAL HORIZON
He stands just off-center like a reluctant ringmaster in a carnival that time forgot. His skin is the color of oxidized copper that has been stained blue by some long patient rain round plates and rivets map the planes of his face and two thin wiry antennae curl from his scalp like question marks. Tiny brass fittings punctuate those antennas catching the light and counting it out in steady small reflections. His eyes are huge and oatmeal-orange glassy and luminous as if someone threaded little moons into their sockets one iris seems to hold a faint gear-shape another a ring of shadow so that his gaze feels half mechanical inspection half private wonder. He is dressed in a coat the color of dried cochineal—red but softened by wear—buttoned over a neatly fastened white shirt. There is a gentle asymmetry to him: one sleeve slightly longer one lapel tipped with a small badge the collar a touch rumpled like someone who takes great care but has been traveling for a very long time. In his gloved hand he cradles a balloon—bright scarlet too clean and too solemn for the world around it. The balloon floats on a thin string a domestic human touch amid the spindles and spires of a more mechanical horizon. Behind him the landscape rises in a chorus of bottle-shaped towers and tapered chimneys a skyline assembled from flasks and alembics rather than stone. They stand in rows and clusters each a different color—sunset ochres bruised purples warm corals—like an industrial field of blown glass. Small spheres and beads orbit the bases of these towers as if gravity here favors curiosities rather than laws. A large gear sits at his feet half-buried and stained with the same kind of age that marks him—proof that this place is engineered as much by time as by intent. Tiny details crowd the foreground. Pitted rivets form constellations across metal surfaces a sponge-like brass mass hangs nearby textured like a brain or a forgotten remnant of some alchemical experiment. Little bubbles cling to the air—painted beads of oil or soot—suspending moments rather than water. The colors are intense and layered where shadows fall they do so in indigo and slate where light strikes it flares with ocher and coral making the whole scene look like a memory rendered in lacquer and enamel.
