ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: LIFE UNDER CONSTRUCTION
A red sun offset and imperfect hovers behind her head like a coin nailed to a faded sky. It throws a warm halo that should soften the scene but instead it sharpens every plane of her face: cheekbones cast in quiet architecture a bridge of nose like a slender column. The artist has not painted a likeness so much as a proclamation — a single head and neck rising from a battered wall solemn and deliberate as though carved from some future bronze that remembers rain. Her skin is rendered in a deep almost obsidian tone that catches stray flecks of color — tiny squares of orange and turquoise flecks of rust — as if starlight and city neon had settled there and been paused forever. These are not accidental marks theyre arranged like an inventory of memory like coordinates on a map that refuse to be ignored. Small geometric blocks drift across her jaw and temple a tessellation of thought. Lines and grids lace the background an abstract blueprint that hints at planning at the scaffolding of a life under construction. She tilts her chin slightly not facing us but not quite turned away. Her eyes are half-closed the lids weighted with thought there is a patience there that feels ancient the kind of patience safeguarded by people who have learned times rhythms by heart. Around her mouth the paint is thinner the brushstrokes more intimate and you imagine the quiet of breath the pause before a sentence you will wish you had heard. The surface around her neck is long and elegant statuesque and the paint drips like a slow river down toward a suggestion of shoulders — or perhaps toward the memory of them — until it dissolves into the background. The canvas is scarred in places: patches where pigment has been washed back to reveal the raw grain of whatever lay beneath. These abrasions look purposeful like archival cuts in a long report exposing earlier drafts of color and thought. Splashes of ochre and burnt sienna puncture the composition energetic and impulsive as if someone had flung a memory against the wall and let it settle there precisely where it landed. Geometric frames hover and intersect — faint rectangles partial circles — suggesting both construction and containment the desire to measure the unmeasurable. There is tension between the organic and the engineered: the smooth tender modelling of her features versus the hard drafting-paper lines that surround her. It reads like a conversation between soul and system. The red halo behind her could be sunrise or warning light the squares could be satellites or scars. The whole piece insists on being both human portrait and schematic — a dossier of emotion disguised as abstraction. As you move closer you see faint starbursts of metallic sheen at the edge of a cheek a cheekbone that seems to hold its own small cosmos. The eyes though partly shadowed are the works most stubborn truth: they anchor the geometric chaos and give it moral weight. She is not a passive vessel for color she appears to be holding counsel with the painting itself conducting an internal reckoning that the viewer is invited against better judgment to eavesdrop on. When you step back the image resolves into a memory you might carry home: a face that is both public monument and private diary an emblem of somebody who has been through maps and storms and still keeps a horizon in her posture. The artwork leaves you with a strange insistent question that has nothing to do with who she is and everything to do with what she remembers — and what she chooses to keep like small deliberate squares pressed into the skin of the world.
