ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: HELD UNDER TENSION
A corridor opens not of stone or glass but of pure geometry — an impossible tunnel framed by stepwise bands that retreat into a vanishing point. On the left the ribs are austere: black and cream alternately thick and thin folding inward like the pleats of a magician’s box. On the right the ribs explode into a carnival of color — lime saffron teal coral — each stripe a stair that pulls the eye toward the same distant center. The split down the middle reads like a seam where two worlds were stitched together and held under tension. At the heart of the tunnel sits a square within the square a small room painted in strict quadrants of muted blue red green and cream. From its center an arc of white and pale mauve crescents overlays a dark semicircle: a keyhole moon as if somebody has cut a window to peer into another dimension. That central aperture anchors the composition a calm compass around which the rest of the theater spins. Two spheres drift through the space like celestial voyagers. One a smaller orb of green with a crescent highlight hovers on the left half-caught by monochrome shadows as if reluctant to leave the disciplined grayscale. The other larger and cobalt with a bright white gleam floats against the riot of color on the right catching stripes like reflections on a polished lens. They oppose and echo one another — twin satellites negotiating the boundary between order and celebration. Lines march toward the center with the relentless rhythm of a pulse. On the left those lines are taut and measured on the right they chime with joyous variety each color a note in a melody you can almost hear. The floor beneath alternates between solid planes and banded pathways: blues and blacks become pathways outward while the right-hand path is a multi-hued staircase leading the eye upward and onward. Perspective compresses and expands in the same breath making the space feel both intimate and infinite. There is a tension here between restraint and abandon between the minimal and the baroque. Geometry becomes personality: the left is a careful librarian cataloguing edges and shadows the right is a street fair where ribbons of pigment tumble into unexpected alliances. The central square — neither monochrome nor riotous — is the negotiator refusing absolute allegiance and instead blending halves into a new uneasy harmony. As you stare the image does not remain still. The tunnel breathes. Each stripe seems to tilt and slide by a fraction the spheres wobble on their invisible axes and the central aperture offers the faintest hint of motion as if something beyond wants to turn the key. It is a composition that reads like a moment of decision frozen just before a door is pushed open. Walk forward and you might choose a side: the cool silent discipline of black and cream or the warm insistent invitation of color. Or stand where you are at the seam and let the shapes negotiate for you — a small perfect peace balanced on the razor edge between two worlds.
