ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: COMMUTER’S REFLECTION
They built a face out of light and angles like someone had taken the city’s palette and folded it into a mask. At first glance it reads almost like a map: broad planes of color stacked and intersecting each block telling its own quiet truth. A deep semicircle of black crowns the forehead like a helmet or a halo below it a slice of yellow slides down the temple and cheek in a sunbeam. Opposite that a vertical swath of navy-blue shadow eats into the jaw as if evening has already settled on one side of the stranger’s face. The features are both present and abstracted. A single eyebrow becomes a red swoop—precisely arched theatrical—hovering over an eye that’s more silhouette than socket another eye is a dark crescent tucked under a cool blue lid. The nose is implied by a meeting of planes instead of contour a pale strip against a charcoal plane. Lips—impossibly red and slightly parted—pull the composition toward the human offering warmth amid the geometry. That red is the painting’s insistence on feeling: a punctuation mark that could be a smile a secret or a word suspended between breaths. Look closer and you find the wall’s memory in the image: the pigment is not pristine. There are hairline cracks and scuffs where rain has kissed the paint thin drips and faded edges speak of seasons and passing traffic.
