ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: OPTICS AND GEOMETRY
The frame opens like the first line of a strange fable: a windswept desert under a high brilliantly full moon every grain of sand washed in silver light. At the center of that quiet expanse rises a sculptural sentinel — a tower of folded metal that seems both engineered and grown. At first glance it reads as a single continuous ribbon — polished chrome that curls and flips through space. Thin blade-like panels unfurl like sails caught in an invisible current their edges razor-sharp against the sky. Some faces are concave catching the moonlight and concentrating it into bright crescents others are convex mirrors that reflect the dunes scattering fragmented horizons across their surfaces. A slender mast pierces upward anchoring the composition and lending the whole piece a fragile kinetic balance as if one breath could set it turning. Surrounding the sculpture crystalline clusters punctuate the sand. They jut from the ground with geometric certainty: facets catching light in hard diamond flashes that contrast with the smooth flowing metal. Their forms are angular and resolute where the central structure is sinuous — an interplay of sharp and soft manufactured and mineral. The moon looms large above detailed and tactile its pockmarked face lending a timeless witness to the scene below. Visually the image is a study in contrasts and reflections. The cool reflective metal borrows the tonalities of the sky and moon creating an effect where sculpture and environment bleed into one another you can see the dune ridges and the moon’s halo bent and repeated across polished surfaces. Shadows fall long and crisp slicing the sand into bands that underscore the scene’s stillness. The overall palette is nearly monochrome — pearlescent silvers muted ivories and the deep graphite of shadow — which pushes the viewer to read form and light rather than color.
