ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: DIAMONDS AND PYRAMIDS
In the first “panel” of this scene your eye steps into a vast white-walled chamber that feels part laboratory part cathedral. The floor is a grid of neat squares like graph paper laid out beneath the entire world. The walls stretch upward at steep angles converging toward a distant ceiling giving the sense that this place is both room-sized and endless. Front and left gigantic gears lean into the frame. Their teeth are sharp and precise each cog rendered in steel-gray. They seem frozen mid-turn as if the mechanism of some colossal machine has paused just long enough to be observed. Their scale dwarfs the tiny silhouettes of people scattered across the floor emphasizing how small human figures are compared with the machinery and structures they’ve built. At the center rises a tall slender tower like a radio mast or an industrial obelisk. It’s composed of linear trusses and triangular supports an engineering skeleton. Suspended around it is a rotated diamond shape in red and within that another in blue and black—a nested geometry pulsing with color against the monochrome surroundings. From the tower hangs a dark inverted pyramid that meets a blue wedge below making a sharp arrowlike form pointing both up and down at once as if stitching together two opposing realms. Tiny human figures walk near the tower no more than silhouettes. They appear to be in conversation or perhaps inspection suggesting that this structure is an object of study or worship—or both. To the right side on a wall of shaded gray floats a small cube colored red and white hovering away from the surface like an abstract thought rising out of the grid. Further back suspended high up is a minimalist platform or lift a simple rectangular cage hanging in midair. Thin lines suggest cables or wires but they fade into the white giving the impression of weightlessness. Behind it another angular structure like a skeletal truss bridge or crane leans diagonally into the space reinforcing the sense that this world is constructed from lines vectors and tension. On the right foreground sits a cubic block clean-edged and stark. Behind it a grid wall holds a pattern of filled-in squares reminiscent of a Tetris piece or a pixelated architectural plan as if a building is being designed or assembled from discrete units of logic. Two tiny figures stand beside these elements dwarfed and contemplative like architects reviewing a model that is also their reality. Throughout the composition is dominated by sharp diagonals and intersecting axes: the grid of the floor and walls the angled gantries the circular orbits hinted around the central tower.
