A.P.Polo - "Ernst Happel" - Hamburg / Germany. Ernst Franz Hermann Happel (1925 – 1992) was an Austrian football player and manager. Happel is regarded as one of the greatest managers of all time, winning both league and domestic cup titles in the Netherlands, Belgium, West Germany, and Austria. Happel won the European Cup twice, in 1970 with Feyenoord Rotterdam and 1983 with Hamburger SV, managed Club Brugge to a European Cup runner-up finish in 1978, and won a runners-up medal with the Netherlands at the 1978 FIFA World Cup. This is the best result ever for a non-domestic manager in a World Cup alongside Englishman George Raynor's Swedish runner-up campaign in 1958. He was the first of the six managers to have won the European Cup with two clubs (Carlo Ancelotti, Ottmar Hitzfeld, José Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and Jupp Heynckes being the other five). He is also one of six managers–– along with Ancelotti, Mourinho, Giovanni Trapattoni, Tomislav Ivic, and Eric Gerets–– to have won top-flight domestic league championships in at least four countries. As an artist based in Hamburg, this abstract painting is in the colours of Hamburger SV (HSV), which Ernst Happel coached from 1981-1987 and with them became German champions in 1982 and 1983 and runners-up in 1984 and 1987. In addition, HSV achieved the greatest success in its history, namely winning the European Cup of Champions in 1983 against the heavy favourites Juventus Turin, who were considered the best club team in the world at the time. Hamburger SV tried to hire Happel as their new coach for the 1978/79 season back in February 1978. However, this was refused by the German Football Association due to the lack of a German coaching licence. "We have to protect the coaches who have obtained a licence with us," said the German association, so Branko Zebec was hired as the successor to coaches Rudi Gutendorf and Arkoc Özcan, who had been employed during the unsuccessful 1977/78 season, which finished tenth in the table. The DFB would not change its attitude towards foreign coaching licences until 1980 in connection with the signing of Dutch star coach Rinus Michels by 1. FC Köln. During the same period, Happel also had talks with Real Madrid, but these were obviously unsuccessful. Happel's path then led him from Standard Liège to Germany in the summer of 1981, where he ultimately became coach at Hamburger SV as the successor to Zebec, who had been dismissed due to alcohol problems, and interim solution Aleksandar Ristic - in the meantime, the DFB had set a precedent regarding foreign coaching licences in 1980 after the signing of Rinus Michels by 1 FC Köln, which HSV manager Günter Netzer built on when signing Happel. During his time in Hamburg, Happel lived in Henstedt-Ulzburg. In his second season, Ernst Happel was able to repeat his triumph with HSV in the German championship and once again reached for the European Cup. The European Cup final against favourites Juventus Turin, featuring superstars Michel Platini and Zbigniew Boniek, ended 1:0 for HSV in front of 75,000 spectators at the Olympic Stadium in Athens thanks to a goal from Felix Magath - the greatest success in the club's history to date. Before his last season at HSV, Happel had to undergo an operation in the summer break of 1986 due to a stomach illness. As a result of the illness, he had lost a significant amount of weight and was still weak at the start of training at the end of June 1986. Happel remained in Germany until 1987 and celebrated winning the DFB Cup in his final year before returning to his home country. "I will always be associated with HSV because I was able to work here undisturbed and professionally," said Happel on the occasion of his departure from Hamburg. During his time in Hamburg, he also came into contact with the German national team when he provided technical support to Franz Beckenbauer when he took over as team manager. Ernst Happel was tactically ahead of his time. He was one of the first coaches to play his teams with space defence instead of the usual man-to-man defence. "Stand high" and "defend offensively": These terms are used almost inflationarily in today's football. At the time of Ernst Happel's death in 1992, nobody was using these words; after all, they were still playing with a libero back then. And yet the football coach is regarded as the pioneer of this modern development. What may initially sound like a contradiction in terms changes as soon as you delve deeper into the Viennese-born coach's working methods and thoughts. Like a painter whose painting only makes art history years or decades after his death, Ernst Happel played a major part in the trend in today's football, at least as far as top teams are concerned, towards "offensive defence". In principle, it was his invention, as the Viennese was already well ahead of his time as a young coach. Even as a player, he set the course for a career as a coach, which was to be even more successful than his active career. Happel was a defender, although this description does not begin to define his intelligence and versatility. The Austrian proved that you can also be technically adept as a defender. His main focus was on the offside trap, which the coach revolutionised. With a simple whistle at exactly the right moment, he told his defensive colleagues to switch from defence to offence and take two steps forward. It will come as no surprise to anyone that Happel's innovation caused a worldwide furore and was imitated. His understanding of football was not to allow oneself to become dependent on the opponent, but to impose one's own game and philosophy on them. The modern version of the offside trap was ultimately just one - albeit crucial - component of his system, which he would perfect as a coach. Happel's system was designed to take away the opponent's breathing space by positioning the defensive unit just before the halfway line. The combination of various elements and highly focussed work was what made Happel's philosophy so appealing. The opposition were forced into their own half of the pitch for practically the entire match and finally lost the fun of football the moment the offside trap struck mercilessly once again. Once in Rotterdam, the coach achieved his first major successes. In addition to two league titles and a cup win, he crowned his Rotterdam years in 1970 with triumphs in the European Champions Cup and the World Cup. While the trophy cabinet of the clubs he coached would make many of today's coaches green with envy, it must also be pointed out that the "bare results" would not be to the taste of every current coach. The coach's attacking urge led to his teams conceding plenty of goals at every stage of his career. However, the Austrian was unconcerned by the occasional holes in the defence due to the high level of risk, as long as his team had more goals than their opponents at the end of each match. As Happel was considered a friend of "calculated" risks, his concept usually worked. Nevertheless, his understanding of football often caused his own players to look puzzled, as Günter Netzer recalled in an interview: "He had the team play so aggressively that sometimes it was almost too much for the players. They simply weren't used to conceding so many goals. After the 1978 World Cup, however, Ernst Happel was at his peak as a coach. After spells at KRC Harelbeke and Standard Liège, the Austrian took on his first coaching role in the German-speaking world. From 1981 to 1987, he was to lead Hamburger SV to completely new shores. Even today, the always meticulous and discipline-obsessed coach is still considered a crowd favourite in the Hanseatic city. However, he did not achieve this status because he made a name for himself as "Everybody's Darling". No, Ernst Happel was a "grumbler" who spoke little and, when he did, often threw incomprehensible word constructions into the room. On the one hand, he won the hearts of fans and players with his charming Viennese charm, on the other hand, he had acquired a strange "mishmash" of languages over the years abroad. When a Viennese mixes his language with Dutch, Flemish and English, you have to listen very carefully. However, this did not detract from the success at Hamburger SV. The attacking style of play was good for the Hanseatic side - even if there were the odd frown at the beginning. The coach quickly succeeded in instilling the pressing into the team. As soon as the players realised this, they ran out with an unbridled self-confidence that was unparalleled internationally. After the triumph in the Champions League, however, there was a certain upheaval and the coach did not really succeed in integrating new young protagonists such as Dieter Schatzschneider or Wolfram Wuttke. At the end of his time at HSV, the chain smoker fell ill with lung cancer, which in time also affected his coaching career. The legend returned to his homeland, first taking over FC Tirol and then the coaching position of the Austrian national team in 1991. However, there was no time left for the coaching fox to achieve further great successes. A few weeks before Happel called it a day in November 1992, he played his last game on the coaching bench against Israel (5:2) in Vienna's Prater Stadium. The stadium was later renamed the Ernst Happel Stadium in honour of the coach.
