I bought my first ever camera when I was 11 years old at a yard sale near my home. It was a very old Kodak #2 from around 1910 and it worked well. I asked my aunt to purchase some B&W 120 roll film for me and started my photographic education through trial and error. During my time in the military, I became interested in landscape and documentary photography while in the city of West Berlin, Germany. I recognized that everything changes over time. These days, I still focus on documentary and landscape photography with my second hand Hasselblad X1D and Sony A7RV cameras. Maybe some day I'll be able to afford a new camera. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: 1981 THE BERLIN WALL
In 1981, I was sent to the city of West Berlin as a U.S. Army Military Policeman. So, while I was on patrol, I took made many photos of the Berlin Wall in that area. This photo, was taken not far from the U.S. Army Düppel Housing Area, which is a neighborhood in the borough of Steglitz-Zehlendorf in southwestern Berlin. The photo shows East German guards during a shift change. Even though the East German population was told that the was to protect them from the decadent and fascist West, it was clear that the so called protection devices were designed to keep them in and not us out. This photo was taken with an 1980s East German EXA 1b camera with a Pentacon f1.8/50mm lens. At the time I was using East German Orwo NC19 color negative film. I bought a few different East German Cameras in the 1980s and they all developed mechanical problems not long after they were purchased. However, the East German Orwo film was fairly good and I used it a lot, since it was cheap to buy when I visited the Eastern Sector of Berlin. Back then, I could get a 10 to 1 exchange rate, 10 East Marks for one U.S. Dollar. This meant that shopping in East Berlin was very cheap.
