ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: OLD SHELDON CHURCH DAYBREAK
South of Charleston and north of Beaufort in Yemassee south Carolina is the Old Sheldon Church ruins framed by very old Live Oak Trees, autumn leaves, nearby old graves and sunbeams. Add this scenic site to your road trip along with nearby plantations. According to history, this old church may have been burned twice, once in the Revolutionary War and then again in the Civil War when both General Sherman and Prevost marched through the site. However there is an alternative eyewitness account that Sheldon was not burnt by Sherman's troops, In a letter dated February 3, 1866, Milton Leverett wrote that 'Sheldon Church not burn't. Just torn up in the inside, but can be repaired.' In this view, the inside of the church was apparently gutted to reuse materials to rebuild homes burnt by Sherman's army.
