"Photography is telling a story in a thousandth of a second" This phrase has always been for me a kind of motto to go in search of the next photographic story. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in 2006 I settled in the city of Campeche. My beginnings in photography go back to 1990, year in which I took a basic photography course in the Academy of Visual Arts of Buenos Aires and from there all my training has been eminently self-taught. My lens portrays a wide variety of subjects, but where I am most comfortable is producing nature photography, since from a very young age I was attracted to the natural world and its inhabitants. I am an active member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) and OAS (Ocean Artists Society) and ambassador of the “Great Mayan Aquifer” project and "Nature First" organization. My work has been published in various publications and exhibited in different samples. I´ve participated in photography competitions locally, nationally and internationally, in which I´ve been awarded several mentions. My personal mission when I am behind the camera, is to create evocative and attractive images that capture in the public the interest in the natural aspects of our planet, the beings that inhabit them and the risks in which they are, and from that generate awareness about the importance of the conservation of the planet.

My name is Gustavo Costa, I am a professional photographer and my favorite subject to photograph is nature in all its forms and expressions, be it landscape photography, wildlife photography, underwater photography, macro photography, you name it. Regardless of the subject in front of my camera, I am the happiest man in the world when I am in the natural world. The landscapes of this planet are beautiful and since the beginning of time they have been an endless source of inspiration for humanity. When I started producing photography, I decided that one day I would photograph the famous chain of mountain in the southernmost part of Patagonia. In addition to my photographic objective, visiting that remote point was almost a personal debt that I had with myself. I was born in Argentina, but now I live in Mexico. When I lived in my home country I never traveled to that destination because some other priority always got in the way and I fooled myself saying “don't worry, you can go any other time”. But life teaches us that we should not postpone things because otherwise they never happen. So during the year 2019, and with an overflowing joy and excitement, I began to make the necessary plans to visit that magical land and take the photos that I wanted so much. The plan was to travel in March 2020, during the beginning of autumn, a time when the forest turns red, orange and yellow. Flights, hotels, dates, gear… everything was ready and planned, except the unforeseeable. The pandemic closed the world and, in an instant, shattered all my dreams and desires into a thousand pieces. Great challenges always impose great obstacles. Despite the enormous frustration and sadness, I decided not to give up. This only meant postponing my goal. It was a time to rethink the priorities of life. I took advantage of the moments of confinement to improve my photography and editing techniques, which prepared me better to produce quality images. Fortunately everything began to improve. The vaccines gave us the possibility to resume our lives and slowly the countries began to open their borders. The moment I had been waiting for so long had finally arrived. At the beginning of April 2022, after 4 flights and two days of travel across Latin America, I set foot in the land of glaciers and mountains. The mountains appeared before me majestically. The peaks absolutely dominate the entire region and feel as if they were the eternal guardians that take care of the steppe landscape of Patagonia. I checked into my hotel almost savoring the photos that I could take the next day after so much waiting and yearning. My idea was to get up before the sun rises and photograph the mountains in the first light of dawn, at which point they are beautifully lit from the front. Piece of cake!! The extreme climate of the southern continent, however, had other plans in mind. A large cloud front covered the mountains and prevented me from getting the photo I dreamed of. And so it continued on the second and third day. I had no choice but to wait even longer and pray that on the fourth and last day of my stay in the place, Mother Earth would give me the long-awaited opportunity. With almost childish anxiety I constantly checked the weather reports and finally a source of hope emerged. Good weather was announced for a few hours the next morning. I had very little sleep the night before, the anticipation kept me awake. At 4 am, anxiety pushed me to get dressed and go out to contemplate the sky. At last, the wind had stopped and there were more stars than clouds!!! Apparently, today would be the long-awaited day. I drove to the spot where I had previously decided to take the photo, where there was a view of the Patagonian steppe backed by the high mountains. The air was clean and fresh, the cold felt strong and in the middle of nowhere, completely alone, there I was, waiting for dawn. It is difficult to express the happiness I felt when I saw that the highest peak began to be painted with the warm tones of the first rays of the sun. Slowly the scene lit up as if it were a theatrical play. As the light painted the mountains with its light, I activated the shutter of my camera, grateful to be the spectator of a magical and unique show. After getting the photo I was looking for, a feeling of infinite happiness invaded me and I sat next to my camera for a long time, just admiring the landscape. This image has taught me that we should not put off doing the things we want for later, life is lived today. Landscape photography is a task that requires patience and tenacity, there is no photographic equipment that can replace these two virtues. Today thanks to this photo I can say that I have both.
