ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: ARCTIC CABIN IN PARADISE
Norway was the birthplace of my father-in-law. We have visited here a number of times. Without a doubt it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Lofoten Islands where this photo was taken is an archipelago of islands. Although located in the arctic, the winter temperatures are not terribly cold, controlled by the warmer sea currents nearby. Neaby lights visable are Sakrisoya Island. The house on the left is called a rorbu, roburer or fisherman's cabin and many are considered to be very historic. They come in a number of colors, red being the most common, yellow and white like this one. This time of year in mid-January daylight is just a short time with the sun just rising a bit over the horizon and setting again a few minutes later, The sun does not rise between early December to January 7 making photography a bit of a challenge. This picture was taken January 14, so the sun was above the horizon for a short time near noon. I had hoped to see the northern lights, but clouds and high winds prevented their appearance. We booked and stayed just in roburer during our visit. These old cabins were used by the local cod fishermen and can be rented. Winter, especially in December and January is not tourist season except for the few photographers who choose to visit for the fabulous views. A favorite landscape view of the Lofoten Islands, adjoined a local restaurant we had dinner, with a view of Mount Olstind to the right. We had this beautiful winter, snow, landscape view of Moskenes during the blue hours, right after sunset in January. The clouds were magical off this dock. If I couldn't see the Northern Lights, this was a great substitute!
