ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: HONFLEUR VISITOR CENTER REFLECTIONS
The light was just right, to photograph this old building in Honfleur, an historic old port along the Normandy coastline on the English Channel. A more modern building had been built adjoining the Visitor Center and the glass windows were reflecting the old architecture in the new architecture. Both had the wonderful garden and summer flowers as part of the picturesque package. The Normandy Coast is most famous for the D-Day beach landings, but this northwest region in France also offers picturesque fishing villages, artist colonies and fine beaches. The port city of Honfleur, France, has them all. Honfleur has been delighting visitors for centuries, including painters Boudin, Monet and Corot. The town's heart is its beautiful old harbor, the Vieux Bassin, showcasing tall, thin houses with slate roofs, some dating from the 16th century. France, England and Scandinavia vied for control of the coast of Normandy, including Honfleur since the 9th century. Vikings icontrolled the area in 911, then the Norsemen, later known as Normans. About 150 years later, the Duke of Normandy forded the English Channel to conquer the English. The duke, renamed William the Conqueror, assumed the crown of England. Normandy then became the center of a French-English tug of war during the Hundred Years War. Finally, France gained permanent control in 1450. In more recent years, artists and writers have used this area as inspiration for their work.
