ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: ROLLE PROSECCO WINERY WINDOW BOX
A well known restaurant in the small hamlet of Rolle has stunning views over the wineries. The location is north of Venice in the Treviso District, Conegliano-Valdobbiadene just south of the Dolomite Mountains. Here looking over a windowbox of Petunia flowers backlit by the light near sunset, we were completely surrounded by vineyards and seducing scenery. Rolle consists of a handful of houses, a church, and a renowned restaurant, Da Andreetta, with this pleasant elevated terrace overlooking the hills. The Pieve (Pleban church) of San Pietro, dating to the 11th century and perhaps built over the ruins of a Pagan temple, has a medieval portal under which are five frescoes of St. Antony Abbot, Virgin with Child, Virgin with Saints, Sacrifice of Cain and Abel and Sunday Christ. The interior, with a nave and two aisles, has frescoes from the 12th-15th centuries. The apse features a Christ Pantocrator between the Virgin and St. Peter dating to the 13th century. The Rolle Pass or Passo Rolle is just short of 6,000 ft of elevation and is one of Italy’s Unesco World Heritage sites. It connects the Fiemme and Primiero valleys, and the communities of Predazzo, San Martino di Castrozza and Fiera di Primiero. The pass road was built between 1863 and 1874, when the area still belonged to Austria. The pass lies within the Parco Naturale Paneveggio, Pale di San Martino.
