ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: SAKAMOTO RYOMA
This art piece on the style of Gustav Klimt portraits Sakamoto Ryoma, who was a prominent figure in the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and modernize Japan in the mid-19th century. Born in 1836, he became a skilled swordsman and joined the Tosa Domain's militia. He later became involved in anti-shogunate activities and co-founded the Kaientai, a private naval force that supported the pro-modernization cause. In 1867, he played a key role in negotiations between the Tokugawa shogunate and the imperial court, which ultimately led to the Meiji Restoration and the end of feudalism in Japan. Unfortunately, Ryoma was assassinated shortly after, and his legacy continues to inspire Japanese nationalism and modernization to this day.
