ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: NITEN ICHI RYU
This artwork depicted in a Suprematism style with dark tones the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, who is said to have developed the Niten Ichi-ryu (two heavens as one) style of swordsmanship. This style is characte- rized by the use of two swords, a long sword (katana) and a short sword (wakizashi), in combination. The long sword was held in the right hand and the short sword in the left. The use of dark tones conveys his serious and introspective nature, as well as the violence that was a part of his life as a samurai. The abstract shapes and forms of the Suprem- atism style also suggest the fluidity and grace of Musashi's movements as a swordsman, as well as the philosophical depth of his teachings.
