ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: HER LAST BREATH
This piece depicts an Africa woman thrown overboard during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The Transatlantic Slave Trade was the forced, brutal transport of over 12 million Africans across the Atlantic to the Americas between the 16th and 19th centuries, a horrific system involving capture in Africa, the deadly "Middle Passage" (voyage) on slave ships, and sale into lifelong bondage of slavery. Throwing enslaved people overboard was very common for varies reason including disease, weakness and resistance. Below her is the Molinere Underwater Sculpture off the coast of Grenada which widely interpreted as a tribute to slavery due to the structural connections resembling shackles and the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the Middle Passage.
