ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: CALIFORNIUM
[NOTE: Please contact me if you would like to custom order a specific Element from the Periodic Table - I have many ready to go already!] I know we have our fires, mudslides, and earthquakes. And flip-flops. But did you know that Cf was first synthesized in 1950 at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (then the University of California Radiation Laboratory) by bombarding curium with alpha particles? Californium is used in portable metal detectors, for identifying gold and silver ores, to identify water and oil layers in oil wells and to detect metal fatigue and stress in airplanes... And of course, is used to start the nuclear chain reactions that are used as power sources. It has the second-highest atomic mass of all elements that have been produced in amounts large enough to see with the naked eye (after einsteinium). It was named after the University and the U.S. state of California. Californium is a synthetic chemical element; it has symbol Cf and atomic number 98. It was first synthesized in 1950 at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (then the University of California Radiation Laboratory) by bombarding curium with alpha particles (helium-4 ions). It is an actinide element, the sixth transuranium element to be synthesized, and has the second-highest atomic mass of all elements that have been produced in amounts large enough to see with the naked eye (after einsteinium). It was named after the university and the U.S. state of California.
