Mike Baker
Baker’s Infinite Canvas presents portraits of people who refuse to be reduced by what they have survived. Moving between painterly realism and bold graphic color, the work examines bodily autonomy, illness, grief, aging, and quiet acts of refusal. These subjects are not presented as inspirational symbols. They are complicated people claiming the right to exist without permission, explanation, or apology. Digital and AI tools are part of the process. Human experience remains the subject.
ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: IGNITE THE SKY
Ignite the Sky She kneels on ground that looks scorched, her palms pressed against the earth as if she’s feeling for something still alive beneath it. The air around her shimmers with heat, and her wings—alive with fire and movement—flare against the smoke. There’s exhaustion in her posture, but not surrender. She’s been through the burning, and somehow, she’s still luminous. When I made this, I kept thinking about the women I’ve met who live in that space between breaking and becoming. The mothers, the daughters, the nurses, the advocates—the ones who hold pain in one hand and compassion in the other. They’re not waiting to be rescued. They’re working, caring, leading, healing, even when it costs them. Ignite the Sky is about that kind of fire. Not the one that destroys, but the one that transforms. The one that begins in loss and turns into motion. It’s about women who don’t ask what’s possible—they redefine it. The ones who rebuild the world from ashes and still make it beautiful. She doesn’t fight the flames. She moves with them, shaping them into light. That’s the story here. Not of being saved, but of becoming unstoppable.
