Mike Baker
Baker’s Infinite Canvas presents portraits of people who refuse to be reduced by what they have survived. Moving between painterly realism and bold graphic color, the work examines bodily autonomy, illness, grief, aging, and quiet acts of refusal. These subjects are not presented as inspirational symbols. They are complicated people claiming the right to exist without permission, explanation, or apology. Digital and AI tools are part of the process. Human experience remains the subject.
ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: WALKING THROUGH THE STORM
She moves with purpose, her eyes set on the horizon, even as the storm churns around her. The sky is heavy with clouds, dark and foreboding, but she walks forward, unshaken. Every detail of her form—from the feathers in her hair to the intricate patterns on her cloak—feels deeply tied to the earth beneath her. She isn’t separate from the wildflowers or the wind-swept plains; she is part of them, moving as though the storm itself bends around her. The flowers at her feet, soft and understated, mirror her quiet resilience. They grow in a landscape that looks barren and harsh, but they thrive, finding strength in the soil others might overlook. Just like her, they embody the power of persistence, of finding beauty in places that feel inhospitable. The light breaking through the clouds in the distance feels like hope—a quiet reminder that storms are temporary, but her strength is not. This piece is about the journey—the act of continuing forward even when the path is difficult and the world feels heavy. It’s about the weight women carry, often unseen, and their ability to move through it with grace and determination. She doesn’t wait for the storm to pass; she walks through it, embodying the quiet, unyielding power of resilience. For me, this work is a reflection of the women who inspire me most. Their ability to face life’s storms, to remain grounded and steady even when everything feels impossible, leaves me in awe. "Walking Through the Storm" is my way of honoring their journeys, their strength, and their unwavering ability to move forward. It’s a story of resilience, of hope, and of the unshakable connection to the world around us.
