On day seems to be the same at our house. The dog came racing in today and alerted us she was excited about something outside. Out we went to investigate. In the crook of our porch against the main house, a Red-tailed Hawk was on the ground. I thought it's wing was injured, but quickly grabbed my camera which was already out just a few feet away. Careful not to get too close I snapped a few pictures before calling the rescue center. I brought a bowl of water and placed it about 6" away from the hawk, trying not to get attacked. We closed the door so it could relax. A few minutes later we peaked out again and the bird was gone. We looked around, but it was gone. We think either it was after a few of the dog's toys or perhaps it was stunned and not really injured. I took the opportunity to turn the photo into a portrait. This is the second time we have had a hawk downed in the yard, the first was a Red-shouldered Hawk. The Red-tailed Hawk is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the most common members within the genus of Buteo in North America or worldwide. They can dive up to 120 miles per hour and are capable of capturing a small dog or cat. The female and male versions look the same except size, so don't know which this is. They mate for life. It is becoming obvious we live in the middle of a nature preserve, but are blind to the number of species here. These birds are social and can be trained and used in a similar manor as falcons.
