ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: VENICE NIGHT ST MARKS SQUARE AFTER A RAIN
Venice Italy is a favorite for tourists and lovers of Italian architecture. Saint Marks Square is on every photographer's bucket list, but to photograph with crowds on the square is daunting. One night walking in the San Marco District, there was a horrendous short rainstorm which dumped buckets of rain on us. The rain cleared the tourists, and the chairs and music ensembles all disappeared leaving the square empty for mere minutes, St Marks Basilica, the Dodge's Palace, the Campiglio The rain produced exquisite reflections lit by the lights in the square, perfect in monotone colors. If you look carefully there are even a few stars in the sky. Piazza San Marco was designed four centuries ago. In the ninth century, there is said to have been a Christian church here on an open area of the lagoon. Fruits and vegetables were grown in the neighborhood of the church, and one of the numerous canals flowed through the terrain. In 1174, the Venetians filled up this part of the lagoon and paved it with bricks. There the first Carnival of Venice took place, palaces, and the all-towering Campanile were built. It has since become one of the most impressive squares in the world.
