Imagine a legacy steeped in rice and tears, a beautiful old Georgia plantation, the Butler Island Plantation in Darien Georgia, in the late 1700s. Emerald rice fields swaying gently in the sea breeze, their emerald stalks are heavy with grain. Overseeing this domain was Major Pierce Butler, a United States Founding Father with a dark secret: the plantation thrived on the backbreaking labor of enslaved people. Their stories, of unceasing toil, heartbreak, and resilience, are woven into the fabric of this place. The rice plantations were the most deadly. Black people had to stand in water for hours at a time in the sweltering sun. Draped in Spanish Moss, the Live Oak Trees along the Altamaha River dock present a peaceful late afternoon southern winter scene, little changed in hundreds of years.
