I love painting stories with humor, and computers have opened up endless story telling possibilities for me. What I enjoy about digital art more than any other medium is that I can change anything, anywhere, and at anytime, without limits. I’m a bit of a romantic and slightly colorblind. To me the real world is somewhat mundane, gray, and too serious. So I paint my world the way I would like it to be – idealistic, colorful and humorous.
SUR CETTE OEUVRE: STEALING AN EGG
Illustration and Excerpt from ‘Envisage’ (Book One) of the ‘Hyperxia’ trilogy (still in creation) Well, they look kind of like chickens, Kazia thinks. Medium gray, six-feet high, eight-feet long, with worthless stubby wings, a short tail and a head and beak that resembles an eagle. The over-sized chickens are scattered in clumps over an enclosed area, with most sitting on one to three eggs within ground nests made of twigs. Each egg, white with dark speckles, is twelve-inches and weighs twenty pounds. Kazia watches for a while crouched down behind a clump of bushes. The lion soon joins her. These birds move more like eagles, not chickens. Chickens dart their heads forward and backward as they walk, while these giant birds have a steady walk, slow and careful. They cock their heads, like an eagle, from side to side as though searching for prey. Brief scuffles erupt occasionally by a few rogue chickens wandering around picking fights. She throws a stick at one of them to see how it would react. It hardly notices. Kazia's stomach growls. How do I steal an egg? Eventually, a plan forms in her head. Distract a chicken from her nest. Steal the egg. Run like hell. That's a good plan, now to do it. Everything works better than she planned. Kazia spots the perfect chicken victim hidden from the rest, just out of view of the others, yet far enough away that the other chickens won't hear or see the crime happen. And best of all, she just laid a nice fresh egg. Keeping to the trees without being seen, Kazia sneaks up behind the bird as it settles down on the eggs to incubate. Now, how to distract the bird. Just then, as though planned beforehand, the black mane lion approaches the hen in view from the front. Growling, he baits the squawking mother off the nest long enough for Kazia to snatch the warm, fresh twenty-pound egg and disappear behind a tree. That was easy. Distraction accomplished, lion walks away, and the mother never realizes that she is short one egg. Dumb chicken. Now, the next part of the plan: run like hell, but not too fast. Kazia doesn't want to be seen by one of the other birds. That was easy. At a distance from the brood of birds, Kazia builds a large blazing fire from gathered kindling and sets it burning with a lighter from her backpack. Not wanting to be too close, the lion lays down about twenty-feet from the fire to watch. Once the fire dies down, Kazia immerses the egg in a thick layer of hot coals and waits. She thinks back on how to make a perfectly boiled chicken egg. You bring the water to boiling point, turn off the heat, cover, and wait ten minutes. But how long will it take to cook a monstrous egg, and without water? That's anyone's guess, maybe an hour. Yeah, that should do it. This is much bigger than a chicken egg, and she doesn't have a timer, so she guesses using the Sun's movement. Maybe there's a watch in the bag. There is! Perfect. A new problem, how to break a twenty-pound egg that has a three-sixteenth-inch thick shell. How the baby chicks break out of the shells is a mystery. But how Kazia does it, eventually, is to chop at it with a hatchet from her bag. The timing is about right, overcooked next to the shell, and a small part of the yolk is still runny, but perfect otherwise. Could use some salt, pepper and a lot of butter, though. But anything tastes good when you're hungry. The lion watches the entire process with great interest and surprising patience. Kazia eats her fill, scooping handfuls out, she tosses them to the lion. He skillfully snatches every morsel, allowing none to touch the ground. There is something very unusual about this lion, and... very familiar. "Who trained you? Aren't lions in the wilderness wild? And since when do lions have stripes?" he purrs. Background Story To avoid annihilation of all life on Earth, and maybe even Earth itself, humanity builds eighteen-hundred spaceships to send nine billion people, and all significant plants and animals, to the nearby Earth-like world, Proxima Centauri B, 4.246 light-years away. Twenty-two years later, and one year before the anxiously anticipated Earth’s impact with a Rogue Black Hole, they begin their 500 year voyage. A satellite ship, ‘Sentinel,’ remains behind to monitor Earth’s destruction at a safe distance and report periodically to the traveling ships. The Black Hole does not make a direct hit as predicted, which would have destroyed Earth, but misses by a quarter million miles destroying Earth's Moon, which creates a large Saturn-like ring around Earth. As it passes, the Black Hole leaves behind two of its own moons to circle Earth. The largest is nearly the diameter of Earth's original Moon, and the other is a small oblong asteroid. The intense gravitational pull of this passing Black Hole causes a tremendous strain, rupturing large pockets of pure oxygen deep within Earth, which increases the atmospheric pressure and oxygen by 9%. Fresh water reservoirs deep within are split open causing ocean levels to rise hundreds of feet. World-wide climate becomes warmer, melting polar ice caps and raising the sea levels even more. The Black Hole's intense gravity also reverses Earth's Magnetic Poles and shifts Earth’s axis. Over the next thousand-years, insects grow as much as ten times larger resulting from the increase in atmospheric pressure and oxygen, and most other animals and plant life adapt in their own unique ways. Unknown creatures and also animals long extinct from before the Ice-Age now inhabit the waters and dense forests, as well as giant men six times the height of a man. Traveling at an average velocity of 17-hundred miles per second, the nine billion cryo-sleeping inhabitants arrive safely to Proxima Centauri 475 years later. But, as they near their destination, one ship, named ‘Envisage,’ is called back to Earth. In reaction to the first ship mysteriously returning, Sentinel calls on a specific ship, named ‘Synchronicity,’ to return, with both arriving nearly a thousand-years after leaving Earth. The first ship crash lands on a very changed world, killing all but twelve-thousand of its five million sleeping inhabitants. Man is no longer the dominant species. So, to protect themselves from the dangers of this new world, the survivors build technologically advanced dome cities and villages. Synchronicity arrives fifty-seven years after Envisage and launches only four pods, from the five million, to Earth’s surface-- three teens and a lion. Just before Synchronicity arrives, eight young children die at the same moment from one of the small dome villages; and within the largest of the domed cities all things ‘living’ vanish- all people, plants, animals, insects, and even molds, bacteria, and viruses. Everything is connected-- the two ships returning to Earth, with the first crashing, the other arriving fifty-seven years later and launching only four pods; the eight children dying; and the vanishing of all things living within the larger dome. There are no coincidences.
