"Photography is telling a story in a thousandth of a second" This phrase has always been for me a kind of motto to go in search of the next photographic story. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in 2006 I settled in the city of Campeche. My beginnings in photography go back to 1990, year in which I took a basic photography course in the Academy of Visual Arts of Buenos Aires and from there all my training has been eminently self-taught. My lens portrays a wide variety of subjects, but where I am most comfortable is producing nature photography, since from a very young age I was attracted to the natural world and its inhabitants. I am an active member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) and OAS (Ocean Artists Society) and ambassador of the “Great Mayan Aquifer” project and "Nature First" organization. My work has been published in various publications and exhibited in different samples. I´ve participated in photography competitions locally, nationally and internationally, in which I´ve been awarded several mentions. My personal mission when I am behind the camera, is to create evocative and attractive images that capture in the public the interest in the natural aspects of our planet, the beings that inhabit them and the risks in which they are, and from that generate awareness about the importance of the conservation of the planet.

SUR CETTE OEUVRE: EYE CONTACT
My name is Gustavo Costa, I am a professional photographer and my favorite subject to photograph is nature in all its forms and expressions, whether doing landscape photography, wildlife photography, underwater, macro, etc. No matter what subject I have in front of my camera, I am the happiest man in the world when I am in the natural world. A few years ago we took a very entertaining trip to California with a family friend. In Los Angeles we rented an RV and set out to tour that beautiful state, making stops at different points, including Yosemite Park and others. In these places we would have the opportunity to hike the different trails and there would surely be several opportunities for nature photography. And sometimes, instead of making photographic plans, we have photographic fantasies. My fantasy was to be able to take a photograph of a lynx. These wild cats inhabit the forests and mountains in this area, but like all predators they are extremely elusive and hard to see, so the chances of actually coming across one were slimmer than a hair's breadth. I was reminded of this reality by the owner of a small natural history museum in one of the small towns we passed through, who, when I told him of my desire to see and photograph a lynx, looked at me with a wry smile and said: forget about it! It's practically impossible. His comment did not really discourage me. Realistically he was quite right, but if there is one thing I have learned in my years traveling the natural world, it is that at any time and when you least expect it, things can happen. Yosemite Park greeted us with its breathtaking beauty. For me it was a really special moment to be there. Not only is it a magical place worthy of being visited at least once in a lifetime, but I was able to admire in person some of the landscapes portrayed with such genius and sense of art by possibly one of the most renowned photographers in history, I mean Ansel Adams. Fortunately we found a good place to settle in with our vehicle and made plans to go trekking the next morning. The plan was to walk a trail of more than 6 kilometers up a mountain and through areas of dense forest to reach an impressive waterfall. The day was sunny and cool, and shortly after starting the hike we were enveloped in the soft and relaxing silence of the forest, only interrupted by the singing of birds and the footsteps of other hikers, and the scent of pine invited us to walk. The conditions were perfect for photography and so I set off with my camera equipped with my large 500 mm telephoto lens. I knew that the climb with this heavy equipment would be very laborious, but the effort would be worth it if on the way nature gave us a subject to photograph. So we walked quietly and I had the opportunity to take pictures of several species of birds that inhabit the park. However, at the bottom of my desires there was still a longing to have the chance to see a lynx. I knew that this goal was practically impossible, we were in the middle of the summer vacation season and the park was full of tourists walking the trails. There is nothing that displeases wild cats more than the human presence and the various noises we cause in our transit. Or is there? As I was walking with my huge photographic equipment leaning on my shoulder, many people were commenting on it as we passed each other and suddenly a gentleman very calmly warned me: - If you hurry, in about 10 meters we have just seen a lynx. I could not believe my ears, a lynx! The species I was so eager to see and photograph! Without thinking for half a second, I shot forward in search of the animal. As I approached the area where the tourist had indicated me, I found several people pointing towards the forest in surprise. - This is it! Following the fingers I stepped off the path and quickly and quietly into the forest, trying to sharpen my sense of sight and hearing. If the people were still pointing when I arrived it must not be far away, I thought. So much was my excitement and thrill that I absolutely forgot about my two walking companions, who gave me away their presence by the agitated rhythm of their breathing. I asked them to follow me closely and without making the slightest sound. We squatted down for a few more meters when suddenly I saw him. About 15 meters away from my position I saw how the lynx, an adult specimen was walking calmly in a perpendicular direction from where we were. It was impossible to pretend to follow it through the branches and trees of the forest and the noise we would make would surely scare it away. A picture through the branches would not have much photographic value, I had to try to find a spot where I could get a clean shot of him. I decided that the best thing to do would be to stand in a place close to its path to wait for it and when I had the chance, take the shot. I asked my companions not to move and because of the direction the cat was heading, I calculated that, if he did not change his direction of travel, he would go around a large tree that was very close to me and I would have him in front of me. So I positioned myself about 6 or 7 meters away from the tree, crouched down, raised my camera and waited, praying that the animal would do what I was wishing for. Several seconds passed and it took forever. Just as I was beginning to think that my strategy had not worked, the lynx appeared from behind the tree and met me, pointing directly at it. I think the cat was surprised to see me because it froze and stared at me for several seconds. Those instants were all I needed. I focused his eyes and fired a volley of shots. The sound of gunfire snapped him out of his trance and in the blink of an eye and as if by magic, he disappeared. Almost trembling from the emotion of the moment, I lowered my eyes to review the images I had obtained. From a distance my friends, who witnessed the whole scene, asked me anxiously: "So, did any good picture come out? The broad smile on my face answered their questions. This photo has taught me that when you really want something, things will surely happen.
