SUR CETTE OEUVRE: AMY
Dr. Amanecer Helena Lopez, or Amy as she preferred to be called by friends and colleagues, was a force of nature. At 41 years old, she was the chief of surgery at University Health Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Her reputation as a brilliant, tireless surgeon preceded her. For six years, Amy had worked relentlessly, clocking 70 to 90-hour weeks without a single vacation. The intensity of her work had consumed her, leaving little room for personal life. She had become an indispensable part of the hospital, but at a cost. Her friends, colleagues, and even the hospital board of directors began to notice the toll her unyielding schedule was taking. Concerned for her well-being and her performance, the board mandated that she take a 60-day paid sabbatical. Amy protested, but her arguments were overruled. With no choice in the matter, she found herself at home, staring at her Osprey Xenith 88 Pack, wondering how to spend the next two months. The thought of idleness was unbearable, so she hatched a plan. She packed the essentials: her tent, passport, three credit cards, $2,000 in small bills, and as many personal items as her trusty 1978 Jeep Wrangler could carry. The Jeep, a vehicle she lovingly maintained, was her partner for the journey. It had no roof, no windows, and no doors — perfect for the freedom she craved. Her destination: Cozumel, Mexico. Amy planned a leisurely drive, taking 10 to 12 days to reach Playa del Carmen before ferrying to Cozumel. Along the way, she vowed to explore every hidden gem she encountered. As she drove south, she felt the exhilaration of freedom she hadn't experienced in years. Her first few days were filled with the charm of small Texan towns and the cultural richness of northern Mexico. She stopped frequently, visiting local cafes and markets, savoring street food, and conversing with locals. In one village, she discovered a family-owned pottery studio and spent hours learning the craft from the elderly matriarch. In another, she danced to live mariachi music in a bustling plaza. As she approached the Yucatán Peninsula, she stumbled upon the mountain town of San Cristóbal de las Casas. From the moment she entered, a profound sense of peace enveloped her. The cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and vibrant market stalls radiated a tranquility she couldn't explain. She parked her Jeep and wandered through the town, drawn by the aromas of fresh bread and the sound of distant laughter. At an outdoor café, she ordered a local brew and indulged in a rare moment of relaxation. Her relaxation turned into amusement as she inadvertently eavesdropped on a nearby group. A handsome man in his early forties was animatedly telling a story, his companions roaring with laughter. When he reached the punchline, Amy laughed out loud before realizing her faux pas. The group turned to look at her, and her face flushed with embarrassment. Instead of being offended, they laughed even harder. The man, noticing her discomfort, stood and introduced himself as Riccardo Gonzalez. He then introduced his sister, Anna Marie, and the rest of the group. With a warm smile, Riccardo invited her to join them. To her surprise, Amy accepted. Her flawless but heavily accented Spanish intrigued the group, who were unaccustomed to foreigners speaking their language so well. Riccardo charmed her with a compliment, and for the first time in years, Amy giggled like a schoolgirl. The group’s camaraderie enveloped her, and she found herself sharing stories and laughter late into the evening. As the couples gradually said their goodnights, Amy was left alone with Riccardo. Noticing the evening chill, Riccardo draped his jacket over her shoulders. She hadn’t even realized she was cold until that moment. When Amy worried aloud about finding a place to stay, Riccardo reassured her. In a matter of minutes, he had arranged a room at a trusted local hotel and summoned a taxi to ensure her safe arrival. As they waited, Amy marveled at his thoughtfulness. When the taxi arrived, Riccardo walked her to the car, placed her backpack inside, and shook her hand with a warmth that lingered. As the car pulled away, Amy felt a pang of sadness. She hadn’t felt this connection with anyone in years and wondered if she’d see him again. The hotel was beautiful, but Amy felt a mix of gratitude and melancholy. When she noticed Riccardo’s jacket still on her shoulders, her spirits lifted. She would have to return it, and that gave her hope. After a restorative sleep, she awoke energized and hit the hotel’s modest gym for a workout. By the time she was ready to leave, she was determined to find Riccardo. The desk clerk, with a knowing smile, directed her to Juan’s Café, where Riccardo was having his morning coffee. On her way, Amy came across a chaotic scene: a teenage boy had been struck by a car while riding his scooter. The severity of his injuries was apparent. Without hesitation, Amy stepped in, identified herself as a surgeon, and took control. Her commands were precise, and the EMTs followed her lead. When informed that the town had no surgeon, Amy barked, “I am a surgeon! Get the OR ready!” She rode with the boy to the hospital, stabilizing him en route and performing a grueling nine-hour surgery to save his life. Exhausted but relieved, Amy emerged to meet the boy’s family. Directed to the hospital administrator’s office, she was stunned to find Riccardo and Anna Marie waiting. The siblings were equally shocked to see her. Riccardo’s voice broke the silence: “You’re the out-of-town surgeon?” Tears filled their eyes as the three embraced, their connection deepened by this unexpected turn of events. Thus ended the first chapter of Amy’s sabbatical, a journey that had already changed her in ways she could never have anticipated.
