My creative journey began with moving images. In Grade 11, I was introduced to Film Theory and Video at a new high school, and I was immediately hooked on storytelling through moving pictures and sound. I went on to study Film at York University for one year before choosing a more hands-on (and more affordable) path at Conestoga College, where I completed a diploma in Radio and Television Broadcasting with a focus on TV Production. It was the most fun I had experienced in school to that point.

After graduating, I worked briefly in master control and news production at a television station in Northern Alberta, but it quickly became clear that the role wasn’t the right fit. I returned to the hospitality industry in Banff National Park while working part-time as a video editor for a wedding videographer, a role I held on and off for five years. Life continued to unfold: moves to and from Prince Edward Island, the arrival of three daughters, and eventually the creation of a real estate video business producing walkthrough videos for new condos and holiday homes. After five years, when both my video camera and computer failed, I took it as a sign to step away.

In 2020, I rediscovered creativity through mindful photography on my phone, drawn to nature as a place of calm and familiarity. I found myself returning to the principles of composition I had learned in high school and post-secondary, and the joy of creating images resurfaced. Winning a small photography contest in December of that year sealed it. In 2021, I purchased my first mirrorless camera, and the rest is history.

Photography is now my way of seeing and connecting with the world. As a wife of 26 years and a mother of three young adults, my life experiences shape how I notice beauty, stillness, and meaning in everyday moments. What began as a creative escape has grown into a practice rooted in presence, capturing the quiet emotion and natural wonder of the world around us.

I invite you to visit my website at www.rikkineukom.com where I share photos and stories of my moments in nature.
