Stories Painted in Light
Continuing the Haudenosaunee tradition of storytelling through art.
Paul Newman is a Mohawk artist from the Haudenosaunee Nation of Six Nations in Southern Ontario, now based in Nova Scotia. His work reflects the Haudenosaunee tradition of storytelling, where oral histories, legends, and teachings were passed down through generations to preserve cultural identity. Each of Newman’s impressionist-style digital paintings begins with one of his original photographs and he uses advanced technical brushstrokes to begin the transformation. Through expressive color and movement, he transforms these moments into visual stories that reveal both the seen and the felt. His art is not simply about creating beautiful images, but about sharing lived experience — conveying emotion, memory, and the quiet narratives within the natural world. In this way, Paul Newman continues the legacy of the storyteller, giving voice to stories once spoken, now told through paint and light.
