“Detlef Gotzens' work transcends mere visual representation…”
At the heart of my work lies a fascination with transformation, memory, and the fragile complexity of human experience. Through painting, I explore the tension between abstraction and figuration, structure and spontaneity, destruction and renewal. Each work evolves through layers of gesture, color, erasure, and reconstruction — an ongoing process of excavation in which traces of earlier forms remain visible beneath the surface.
My artistic journey began in Cologne, Germany, where I trained in stained glass craftsmanship and design before expanding my practice into painting, sculpture, and mixed media. The discipline and material sensitivity of those early years continue to influence my work today, particularly in my relationship to structure, light, texture, and architectural space.
Painting, for me, is both an intuitive and deeply reflective process. I do not approach the canvas with fixed answers, but with a willingness to enter into dialogue with the unknown. Over time, images emerge, dissolve, and reappear, carrying fragments of memory, emotion, and lived experience. Some works suggest landscapes of the mind; others hint at human presence or psychological tension. I am interested in creating spaces that invite contemplation rather than certainty.
Color plays a central role in my work — not as decoration, but as energy, structure, and emotional force. Bold chromatic contrasts, raw markings, and layered surfaces create a visual language that reflects both turbulence and balance. Through this process, I seek moments where chaos and order coexist, allowing the work to remain open, alive, and continuously unfolding.
Beyond painting, my sculptural and installation works extend these same concerns into physical space, encouraging a more direct and immersive engagement with material, scale, and perception.
For me, the studio remains a place of complete freedom — a place where intuition, memory, and imagination can intersect without limitation. Each work becomes part of an ongoing exploration of what it means to see, to feel, and to navigate the shifting layers of human consciousness and experience.
Detlef Gotzens (“Dego”) lives and works between Canada and Florida. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums, and continues to evolve through large-scale paintings, mixed media works, sculpture, and immersive contemporary art projects.
