The Voice Behind the Journey
Hello I'm Daniel Hillert, a nature photographer and writer based on Malcolm Island, has spent decades enjoying our natural beauty, but at the same time witnessing the decline of our ecosystems. Reluctant to be outspoken. But now, a turning point has come—one that compels me to speak, to question, and to reflect on the fragile beauty of the natural world.
Exploring the meeting place of wild beauty, community, and conservation through my lens and words, I try to capture the stories of landscapes and the people working tirelessly to protect what remains, reminding us of our shared responsibility to the earth..
Rooted in the rhythms of coastal life, Dan's perspective is both intimate and expansive—shaped by decades immersed in the mist, forests, and tides of Vancouver Island & Beyond. His work invites readers to slow down, notice the subtle rhythms of nature, and rediscover the wonder that still lingers in the world—before it slips away..
I have never strayed from using the camera as my tool of choice working together as one and fits who I am. In 2004, Deb & I moved to Malcolm Island. It was not long before this new home inspired me to create my first self published photography book, “Imagine an Island,” with two more follow.
My Lasted Book:
"Converging Waters" explores an area on the northern coast of Vancouver Island on the edge of the Broughton Archipelago: Queen Charlotte Strait, Broughton Strait, Cormorant Channel, Blackfish Sound. This part of the Namgis First Nation territory is characterized by tree-covered islands, pebble beaches, foggy mornings, rocky islets, orcas, eagles, and an ever-changing light. Boats are at least as important as trucks for the few who live here. The sea and sky dominate the land, and marine mammals and fish seem to overshadow the human residents.

Now For Something New!
Welcome to my new book in design.
"Vancouver Island & Beyond: Whispers From The Wild"...
It is more than a book, it’s a journey through fog-drenched forests, rugged coastlines, quiet bays, and the wild moments that shape a deeper connection to this place. Here, I share the process behind the pages: the photography, the writing, the challenges, the inspiration, and the discoveries along the way. Through this book, my goal is to celebrate what remains, and to remind us of all the fragile beauty. To show what is at risk. If we do not speak, future generations may inherit only stories and the photographs. By following this blog, you walk beside me as the book takes shape—one story, one image, one wild whisper at a time.
This blog exists because a project like this isn’t just created—it’s lived.
