SUR CETTE OEUVRE: GOLD DREDGING MURAL
This is a 6 x 20 foot mural that is to be installed on the exterior of a private Charter School in Oroville, California the "City Of Gold". Gold found at Bidwell Bar, one of the first gold mining sites in California, brought thousands of prospectors to the Oroville area seeking riches. They panned for gold in the Feather River and began using sluice boxes to extract more gold from the river sands and gravels. Oroville quickly became the most important mining town in the state. Mining shifted from individual prospectors using picks and shovels to large corporations that introduced industrialized methods to extract tons of gold. Around 1895, W. P. Hammon and others tested the area to determine the feasibility of mining on a large scale. They introduced bucket-line dredging in 1898, the first in California. The field was highly productive from 1903 to 1916; in 1908 there were 35 dredges and 12 dredging companies active in the field. Output later declined, but dredging was done again from 1936 to 1942 and 1945 to 1952. The dredge field is now an important source of sand and gravel. The total output from dredging is estimated to be about 1,964,000 ounces of gold or 61.375 US tons! This does not include the gold found by individual miners who panned and used a pickaxe, a pan and sluice boxes. The site of this school was once a dredging pond and the school now sits on 8 feet of filled in Feather River gravel.
