Well, this really is a black kettle with a modicum of rust. So, what's cooking? No, not food, although it would help provide one's daily dose of iron. However, in this case, the pot is for boiling yarn after it is spun because newly spun yarn needs to be washed or steamed to set the twist. Most knitters and weavers find that yarns behave better and more predictably if a few extra steps, such as boiling, are taken before they are used as handspun. This happens as part of the Living Heritage Museum at Furnace Town, near Snow Hill, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore/Delmarva. Furnace Town is a 19th century industrial village that includes history and active (reenacted) events of the day.
