A.P.Polo - "Avantgarde" - Hamburg (Germany). The avant-garde includes political and artistic movements, mostly from the 20th century, which share a strong orientation towards the idea of progress and are characterised by a particularly radical approach to existing political conditions or prevailing aesthetic norms. The term avant-garde is generally used to describe a group of pioneers of these intellectual developments or avant-garde objectives. The term originally comes from the French military language and refers to the vanguard, i.e. the part of the troop that advances first and therefore has contact with the enemy first. The German military also originally referred to the vanguard as the avant-garde. For example, the term avant-garde is used in regimental histories before the Franco-Prussian War. In the broadest sense, the term avant-garde assigns a 'pioneering role' to the person described. Avant-gardists are people who initiate new, pioneering developments. In contrast to trendsetters, who only initiate new fashions in the short term, the changes initiated by the avant-garde have a more fundamental and longer-term effect. The avant-garde can generally be understood as a creative and innovative movement that rarely belongs to the prevailing social and economic power elites. Outside of its military origins, the term avant-garde appears in various contexts, but usually refers to either a political, cultural or artistic movement that leaves the beaten track. In the arts and in literature, the term avant-garde (advance guard and vanguard) identifies a genre of art, an experimental work of art, and the experimental artist who created the work of art, which usually is aesthetically innovative, whilst initially being ideologically unacceptable to the artistic establishment of the time. The military metaphor of an advance guard identifies the artists and writers whose innovations in style, form, and subject-matter challenge the artistic and aesthetic validity of the established forms of art and the literary traditions of their time; thus how the artists who created the anti-novel and Surrealism were ahead of their times. As a stratum of the intelligentsia of a society, avant-garde artists promote progressive and radical politics and advocate for societal reform with and through works of art. In the essay "The Artist, the Scientist, and the Industrialist" (1825) Benjamin Olinde Rodrigues's political usage of vanguard identified the moral obligation of artists to "serve as [the] avant-garde" of the people, because "the power of the arts is, indeed, the most immediate and fastest way" to realise social, political, and economic reforms. In the realm of culture, the artistic experiments of the avant-garde push the aesthetic boundaries of societal norms, such as the disruptions of modernism in poetry, fiction, and drama, painting, music, and architecture, that occurred in the late 19th and in the early 20th centuries. In art history the socio-cultural functions of avant-garde art trace from Dada (1915–1920s) through the Situationist International (1957–1972) to the postmodernism of the American Language poets (1960s–1970s). In the history of the visual arts, the term avant-garde stands for the artistic movements of the (early) 20th century and is linked to the concept of modernism or modern art. A characteristic feature of many artistic avant-garde movements of modernism is the endeavour to "elevate art into life practice". The close connection between art and politics is typical of the beginning of the 20th century. Artists no longer wanted to be mere creators of aesthetic objects or to depict reality, but were striving for more ambitious political, social and educational goals. The Russian avant-garde, which was initially promoted by the Bolsheviks, played an important role in the history of the artistic avant-gardes, as did Italian Futurism, which gave its manifestos of "war art" its own, perceived revolutionary aesthetic, which was closely linked to fascism. In post-revolutionary Mexico in the 1920s, muralismo combined art and political agitation. The later transformation of the Russian avant-garde into so-called "Socialist Realism" under Stalin, which was hardly avant-garde in artistic terms, was already laid out in the primacy of politics and popular education over art. Cubism, Cubofuturism, Vorticism, Constructivism, Suprematism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Tachism, Action Painting, Minimal Art, Op Art, Pop Art, Lettrism, Situationism, Fluxus, Happening, Viennese Actionism and so-called Conceptual Art are also considered avant-garde art movements, but were hardly politicised. In the German Reich, avant-garde art was fought against by the National Socialists from 1933 onwards as "degenerate art". Artists who did not conform to the "German Art" regime and remained connected to the avant-garde were persecuted (if they did not have to flee in 1933 or go into exile in the years that followed). Modern works of art were confiscated as "Judaised", partially destroyed or in many cases auctioned off in Switzerland. Jewish artists who were unable to leave Germany in time were murdered in the Holocaust. After the German Reich was defeated in 1945, the German art landscape slowly recovered from this political and intellectual catastrophe in the early/mid-1950s. In the Federal Republic, there were activities by a number of artists whose informal painting had caught up with the avant-garde movements of French Tachism and American Abstract Expressionism and Action Painting. In the 1960s and in the course of the 1968 movement, the development of German art became increasingly important for Europe and the USA. At the same time, the new avant-garde of the post-war period marked the creeping end of the avant-garde concept altogether. While in modernism each of the avant-gardes, which often followed each other in close succession, claimed to represent the latest and "valid" state of artistic development, in postmodern art the various avant-gardes coexisted side by side, often mixing eclectically with each other. Further developments seem possible in many directions; there is no longer a consensus on where to go next. As a result, the word "avant-garde" loses its original meaning and no longer seems appropriate to describe contemporary art.
