On the garden table lay a small, hand—drawn square of numbers, left there as if the wind had set it down gently. The child picked it up. The numbers looked simple: ones, twos, threes, the kind you learn in school, but they sat in a pattern that felt — — alive! When the child traced a line down the first column, the roses gave a soft, happy giggle. When the child traced a line across the top row, the roses gave the same, exact, soft approving giggle. Every line added up to the same number, as if the square was THINKING along with them! Vincent watched from the shade, smiling quietly. “Our story—artist, Lowell Devin made that, but its origins go back much further,” he said. “He believed numbers could be little doors if you listened closely enough.” The child held the square and felt a warm, steady glow in their hand, a feeling like a puzzle that wanted to be understood. The Magic Square didn’t move. It didn’t spin. It just waited, patient and bright, for the next person who wanted to think with it.
