SUR CETTE OEUVRE: SAVANNAH RIVER BRIDGE REFLECTIONS
Visible from the historic district of Savannah, the Talmadge Memorial Bridge fills the horizon over to Hutchinson Island across the river. This bridge was a replacement for another bridge which lacked the height to allow the newer vessels to pass under the bridge. A replacement better able to not impede maritime traffic was completed in March 1991. The new Talmadge Memorial bridge is a cable-stayed bridge. Remnants of the old Ogeechee-Savannah Canal can be seen on the Georgia side, under the bridge. This project took many years to complete in the 1800’s, but was only in use for short period of time. During that time, barges were polled or pulled to various plantations along the canal. The Savannah International Trade and Convention Center and the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort are located on the island with a regular ferry that crosses to the historic downtown district of Savannah.
