ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: RAPPERVIL OUR LADYS CHAPEL
Liebfrauenkapelle, "St. Mary Chapel," is a Catholic chapel in Rapperswil, Canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland, which dates back to the ossuary that was built by the House of Rapperswil around 1253 AD. The small church is near Rapperswil Castle and overlooks Lake Zurich. Both are located in the Alstadt "old City" area on the west side of the lake on the opposite end from Zurich. This is the 3rd iteration of the chapel in this location, built in the 15th century. Built as a rectangular single naved church, 26 ft x 39 ft, with an eaves height of about 26 ft, having an east-facing apse, a small ridge turret with a single bell and a steep gable roof. The late Gothic stone building was built in 1489. The consecration to the Virgin Mary took place on 20 June 1493. The altar was ordained to Mary, the apostles Peter and Paul, Sebastian, Christophorus, Anna and All Saints. A small choir added was added later. Details of the crucifixion scene showing Maria and Magdalena adorn the exterior front of the chapel. The interior of the church is very charming and is worth a visit if you are ever in the area.
