ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: RAPTOR RED TAILED HAWK RUFFLED FEATHERS
We had a chance to see a falconery demonstration of a number of birds at the Birds of Pray Rescue Center in McClellanville, South Carolina including this Red Tailed Falcon. It's directive is to rescue birds of pray, nurse them back to health and if they are healthy release them back into the wild. If not healthy they care for the birds for extended periods of time. The birds are beautiful, the handlers are great and the education this center provides is very enlightening. The center is located north of Charleston and south of Georgetown. This raptor never let me out of his site. Just look at those eyes and then peak at his claws! The red-tailed hawk is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the most common members within the genus of Buteo in North America. This is the most widespread and familiar large hawk in North America, bulky and broad-winged, designed for effortless soaring. An inhabitant of open country, it is commonly seen perched on roadside poles or sailing over fields and woods. Although adults usually can be recognized by the trademark reddish-brown tail, the rest of their plumage can be quite variable, especially west of the Mississippi: Western Red-tails can range from blackish to rufous-brown to nearly white. Red-tailed Hawks are large hawks with typical Buteo proportions: very broad, rounded wings and a short, wide tail. The wing span of this bird is 3.4 – 4.8 ft. They weigh from 24.3-45.9 oz.
