After studying the physics behind cameras in college, I started getting interested in photography when I started hiking. Developing my artistic skill has been a rewarding venture, and enabled me to get a number of my photographs into art galleries and curated art shows, including having one of my photographs from Patagonia selected for a print exhibition in the Louvre. As I transitioned from film to digital, I also became curious about motion pictures, and ended up making a promotional video for a TEDx conference, an experience that got me hooked on cinematography. Since then I have shot over 40 short films and two feature films. Some of those have gotten festival awards, including Best Short, Best Director, and a nomination for Best Picture. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: ALPENGLOW ON MARMOLADO
During a hut to hut hike in Italy's Dolomite mountains one of the huts we stayed at was at Lagazuoi, one of the highest summits in the Dolomites. We left from Pederu, a very lovely hut in the Dolomites. The Pederu accomodations were fantastic, with comfortable rooms and a wonderful three-course dinner, and being nestled in a broad valley the scenery and views from the rooms were beautiful. It was a great place to rest up for the next leg of the trip which was quite a trip, since we were going to travel 14 miles with a net gain of 4000 feet of elevation... with a total descent of nearly 3000 feet on the way. It was a long and tiring trek through a gorgeous mountain range, with its broad valleys and rugged peaks. The scenery along the way helped to take everyone's minds off of the effort as we walked. The last leg was intense; we descended a through a majestic pass down a route so steep that the trail was more like a 2000 foot staircase, but the view from there was of the peak we were heading toward, luring us onward. Then we had to climb back up from that valley toward the ski resort at the summit of Lagazuoi, as high in elevation as Mount Rainier's Camp Muir. Since I was carrying a 50 pound pack thanks to my camera gear I was quite tired when I arrived shortly before sunset. I immediately ordered an Austrian Hefeweisen and bolted outside to photograph the mountains as the sun set, but found no memorable compositions. So instead I enjoyed my beer, got some rest, and then restored my energy with the three course dinner before heading to bed. I was up before dawn and out the door before breakfast to catch the views at sunrise. I was so enamored with the scenery that I nearly missed breakfast, but while there I caputured this image of the rising sun painting the Dolomites' highest peak, Marmolado, with alpenglow.
