After studying the physics behind cameras in college, I started getting interested in photography when I started hiking. Developing my artistic skill has been a rewarding venture, and enabled me to get a number of my photographs into art galleries and curated art shows, including having one of my photographs from Patagonia selected for a print exhibition in the Louvre. As I transitioned from film to digital, I also became curious about motion pictures, and ended up making a promotional video for a TEDx conference, an experience that got me hooked on cinematography. Since then I have shot over 40 short films and two feature films. Some of those have gotten festival awards, including Best Short, Best Director, and a nomination for Best Picture. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: DAWN CLOUDSCAPE WITH MOUNT RAINIER
I'd visited Sauk Mountain once before on a day hike, and loved the views so I wanted to get some magic hour photographs of the majestic views from there. I gathered up my gear and headed up on a weekend in early July, hoping to hike up to the summit and then down to Sauk Lake before sunset, and spend some time among the wildflowers on the summit. The road up was as rough as ever, in some spots barely passable. I was able to reach the trailhead parking lot, so I didn't have to park along the road as I'd expected. The weather was quite pleasant which would make for an enjoyable climb up the steep hillside. Since the trailhead is at a fairly high elevation, the views are wonderful from the parking lot, and only get better throughout the steep ascent. The trail ascends up the mountainside in a series of tight switchbacks, gaining around 2000 feet with only two miles of hiking. There were flowers in bloom on the hillside along the trail, giving me something to look forward to in the summit meadow, along with the majestic views. When I reached the summit however, I was surprised to see that it was still blanketed in snow several feet deep. There weren't going to be any wildflowers blooming in snow that deep. I went to scout the route down to the lake, and realized quickly that it was a no go; the snow was even deeper on that side of the mountain, due to getting less sun than the southern face that I had just ascended. Since it was July, I hadn't packed my snow gear. I found one spot on the summit that was free of snow next to a large tree and pretty close to the cliff. It made for a very dramatic view from my tent, though also a bit of concern due to the proximity of the cliff to the door of my tent. After getting my tent set up, I started exploring the area and looking for subjects to photograph. Thanks to all the dirty snow, I didn't have any wildflowers to explore during the harsh afternoon light, so mostly I just enjoyed the views and waited for the sun to set. The views throughout were beautiful, but toward evening clouds filled the valley. Even Mount Rainier was barely recognizable, due to how much of it the clouds obscured. After a cold night, I woke up early, before the dawn. Overnight the clouds had filled the valley, so as the sun rose I couldn't see the valleys at all; the cloud cover was too dense. However, overnight the clouds had sunk lower, revealing more of Mount Rainier, so as the sun rose the first rays lit up Mount Rainier's snow capped summit, leading to this alpenglow cloudscape. The wildflowers on the hillside were beginning to bloom, so I was excited for the summit meadows.
