I create images that can’t be seen in real life to hopefully draw the viewer in. My abstracts tend to be brightly colored, highly textured and intricate, frequently with multiple layers giving lots of depth. My surreal works might just be flights of whimsy, but many are more thought provoking, cerebral images that grow from morality, metaphysics and of dreams. There was a time when I thought through every detail in a painting but I gradually began to try to let my subconscious take more control of the process. This led to creating more abstracts, and my surreal paintings becoming less refined but freer. I no longer always strive for the deep meanings in my art. While at one time I felt a need to “understand” my paintings, I now prefer to feel them. After all, we can only intellectually understand things to a limited degree, but we can feel to the depth of our souls. I'LL BE ADDING TO THIS GALLERY SO CHECK BACK TO SEE WHAT'S NEW!
ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: BUDDHA DREAMS AMIDST THE RUBBLE
I painted this in response to the Taliban's destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan in 2001, which absolutely broke my heart. In what I considered to be appropriate under the circumstances, this painting is made from reclaimed materials: the wood support and frame I rescued from someone’s trash and the Buddha and green area behind his head were done on reclaimed paper. Even though I was upset over the savage destruction of these giant and ancient statues, I dare say Buddha would not have been. So he is depicted in peaceful meditation, with a lotus flower emanating from his forehead / 3rd eye. The colors are vivid and vibrant, in stark contrast to the rubble left after the explosions demolished the statues.
