"Oh No" by Edward Mitchell – April Feature of the 2023 WMO Calendar Contest "Oh No" is a striking image composed of eleven long-exposure photos capturing the full intensity of an Arizona monsoon. Taken during a ten-minute window, this photograph showcases multiple lightning strikes as a storm raged over the desert in Peoria, Arizona. No manipulation was needed—just the natural beauty of the lightning illuminating the landscape. ------------------------- When I arrived at the location, the storm was already in full fury. The sky was alive with lightning, and the energy in the air was electrifying. I quickly set up my camera, knowing I didn’t have much time. Within minutes, the storm was directly overhead, and staying longer would have been too dangerous. I captured as many shots as I could during those ten intense minutes, taking advantage of every lightning strike that lit up the sky. The photo is a combination of eleven long-exposure shots, each one adding to the chaotic beauty of the scene. The saguaro cactus in the foreground gives a sense of scale, while the lightning dominates the composition, creating a mesmerizing display of nature’s power. I titled this piece "Oh No" because that’s exactly what ran through my head as the storm raged above me—there’s a point where awe turns to concern when you realize you’re in the middle of something much bigger than yourself. This moment, frozen in time, represents the awe, excitement, and respect I feel for nature’s untamed forces. The image was later selected as the April feature for the World Meteorological Organization’s 2023 calendar, a recognition that I’m deeply honored by. Knowing that this image required no manipulation—just the storm in its natural, unfiltered state—makes it one of my proudest works.
