ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: PHRYNE REVEALED BEFORE THE AREOPAGUS BY JEAN-LEON GEROME CLASSICAL FINE ART XZENDOR7 OLD MASTERS REPRODUCTIONS
Phryne Revealed Before The Areopagus c1861 by French Painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824 - 1904), was also an accomplished sculptor of the Academic Period; being considered one of the most important artist of that period.
This painting by Gerôme, of Phryne Revealed Before The Areopagus; depicts the trial of Phryne (real name Mnesarete) the Greek Courtesan (a kept mistress or prostitute - particularly one with influential, wealthy and powerful clientle) that was charged with a capital offense.
She is being defended in court by the Greek Orator Hypereides (390 - 322 BC), who was one of the leaders of the Athenian resistance to King Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great (356 - 323 BC); and who was also one of her many lovers.
Though the nature of what she was charged with is not specified by Athenaeus, a Pseudo-Plutarch writes that she was accused of impiety (which is considered a lack of respect for a God).
According to Diodorus Periegetes, the speech for the prosecution was written by Anaximenes of Lampsacus; and when the verdict to be going against Phryne; Hypereides removes her robe, bearing her beautiful nude body and breasts before the council of judges to arouse their pity.
Her beauty was such, that it instilled in the judges a feeling of superstitious fear; and they were unable to bring themselves to condemn "a prophetess and priestess of Aphrodite" to death; thus they unanimously decided to acquit her of the charge of impiety, out of having pity for her.
Phryne Revealed Before The Areopagus is a retouched digital art old masters reproduction of a public domain image.
