A.P.Polo - "Das Glas ist halb voll" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art. Abstract, contemporary representation of the proverbial saying and, if you like, the controversial question of whether a glass is half full or half empty. The German saying "Das Glas ist halb voll" (the glass is half full) corresponds to the world view of optimism. The question of whether a glass is half full or half empty is initially a descriptive figure of speech to illustrate the psychological-philosophical conflict between the world views and attitudes of pessimism and optimism. For a pessimist the glass is half empty; an optimist will choose half full. The physician Susan Vaughan, a lecturer in psychiatry, published a book in 2001 entitled Half Empty, Half Full, The Roots of Optimism, in which she uses biological and psychological experiments and studies of brain physiological processes to try to prove that the tendency towards pessimism or optimism is related to early, now unconscious childhood experiences of security and frustration. However, pessimism and optimism did not remain a state but a process, so that the brain could be outwitted and moods could be modulated. In psychological perception and philosophical reflection, therefore, the course or process is simultaneously added to the static as an independent aspect. At this level there can no longer be such a clear solution as in natural science or mathematics, where the statement is: The content of the vessel is 50% or 1 / 2. Only from a neutral point of view or in the sense of political correctness further statements are possible: The glass is half full and half empty at the same time. An approximately neutral attempt would also be the before-and-after analysis considering different perspectives. If the glass was empty before (e.g. a new purchase or shortly before filling) and was half filled, it is half full or still half empty. If a glass is full (e.g. poured by a bartender) and handed out to a guest, the glass is half empty or still half full after it has lost half of its contents. The whole thing becomes even more complex if, in addition to the glass and the different perspectives of viewers, different (economic) interests of the viewers are added (e.g. consumption). This turns the psychological-philosophical question into an economic model theory - for a bartender who fills a glass (we assume it is glass a) and does not empty it, the glass a is full, half full, 1/4 full etc... While for the guest, who looks from a different perspective, glass a empties more and more with every sip (after all, it does not fill). So for the guest the glass a is full, half empty, etc. Transferred back to the psychological-philosophical controversy, this could relativize the influence of pessimistic or optimistic basic attitudes. After all, the answer to the question also depends decisively on the degree of thirst or is also influenced, for example, by motivations such as thriftiness. The question is also an example of the existence of a "third way". An extension is: what does the engineer say. And the answer is: 'The glass is twice as big as it should be'.
