The genome, also known as the genetic material of a living being or a virus, is the totality of the material carriers of the hereditary information of a cell or a virus particle: chromosomes, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) in the case of RNA viruses, in which RNA serves as an information carrier instead of DNA. In an abstract sense, this also includes the entirety of the hereditary information (genes) of an individual. The term genome was coined by Hans Winkler, professor of botany at the University of Hamburg, Germany, in 1920, following Thomas Hunt Morgans successful combination of the chromosome theory of inheritance with Wilhelm Johannsens hypothesis of genes as inheritance units. The field of genetics, which is concerned with research into the structure of genomes and the interactions between genes, is known as genomics.
