Hello, my name is Mike Lee, and I am a landscape and nature photographer based in Janesville, California. Photography has been a passion of mine for many years, and since retiring from my first career in 2018 I've decided to make photographic art that all-too-important next chapter. Through my lens, I aim to share the landscapes, wildlife, and stunning moments that I encounter in Northern California and beyond. I've always had an appreciation for nature, and living in such a beautiful and diverse area has provided me with endless inspiration. From the towering Sierra Nevada mountains to the serene valleys and forests, I find myself constantly in awe of the world around me. My photography is an attempt to preserve and share these awe-inspiring scenes. Whether it's the soft light of dawn or the dramatic colors of a sunset, I aim to capture the emotion and beauty that nature evokes in me. As a photographer, I am always seeking to challenge myself and refine my skills. I use a variety of techniques and equipment to get the best possible shot, from wide-angle landscapes, day or night, to intimate close-ups of plants and animals and, most recently, near infrared photography using a modified camera. I enjoy the process of finding the perfect composition, whether it's during a quiet morning hike or a spontaneous moment while out exploring. The art of photography, for me, is about observing and capturing the world from a new perspective - one that invites viewers to appreciate the finer details they might otherwise miss. I'm honored to be a member of the Blue Goose Gallery of Artists in Plumas County and the Lassen Arts Council in Susanville California. These organizations have given me the opportunity to connect with other artists and showcase my work to a wider audience. Being part of such supportive communities has been incredibly rewarding, and I've learned so much from the talented individuals around me. Through exhibitions, workshops, and collaborations, I've been able to grow as an artist and share my love for photography with others. My work has been displayed in several local galleries and exhibitions, and I'm always thrilled to see how people respond to my images. I find it fascinating how each person can interpret a photograph differently, and I love hearing the stories and emotions that my work can evoke. When traveling on California State Route 44 headed toward Redding California to see family, I am always ready to pull over at a small wide spot on the Hat Creek Rim above the community of Old Station if nearby Mount Lassen is looking photogenic. On this particular mid-morning it certainly was. I mounted a telephoto lens and deep infrared filter on my full-spectrum modified camera and captured this frame of Mount Lassen, with Chaos Crags visible to the right of the peak. Deep infrared produces striking black and white imagery, and with contrast emphasized in post-processing, scenes like this take on a look I find reminiscent of the work of Ansel Adams. Interestingly, after getting deeper into infrared photography, I learned that Adams did experiment with infrared film himself, which helps explain the extremely dark skies seen in some of his desert landscapes (though there is some debate over how much was true infrared versus strong red filtration). Mount Lassen, also known as Lassen Peak, is an active lava dome volcano that last erupted in 1915. It lends its name to Lassen Volcanic National Park, a small but remarkably diverse and beautiful park spanning Lassen, Shasta, Plumas, and Tehama counties in Northern California. Chaos Crags, a group of six dacite domes, formed during an eruption roughly 1,100 years ago and remain one of the park’s most dramatic volcanic features. This compelling infrared black and white rendition of Mount Lassen and Chaos Crags is ideal for fans of classic landscape photography, black and white imagery, and admirers of Ansel Adams. It makes a striking statement piece for offices, studies, or contemporary home decor, and a thoughtful gift for photography enthusiasts, mountain lovers, and residents of Redding, Chico, Susanville, Burney, or anyone with a deep appreciation for Northern California’s iconic volcanic landscapes.
